What is the NUST Merit Formula?

NUST (National University of Sciences and Technology) calculates admission merit using its own entry test called NET (NUST Entry Test). Unlike most Pakistani universities that use the standard HEC 10-40-50 formula, NUST places significantly higher weight on the entry test — making it the most critical factor in your NUST aggregate.

Official NUST Merit Formula 2026

Aggregate = (Matric% × 10%) + (FSc% × 15%) + (NET Score × 75%)

NET is scored out of 100. The NET score you receive is entered directly as a percentage value (e.g., a score of 78 means 78%).

⚠️ Important: NUST vs Standard HEC Formula

Most calculators online use the standard HEC formula (Matric 10% + FSc 40% + Test 50%). NUST uses a different formula: FSc weight is only 15% while the NET test carries 75%. This means excelling in the NET is far more impactful at NUST than at other universities.

NUST 2025 Closing Merit — Department-wise Cutoffs

The following are estimated closing merit percentages from NUST's 2025 admission cycle. These change slightly each year based on seat availability and applicant pool.

Worked Example — NUST Aggregate Calculation

Let's calculate the aggregate for a student applying to NUST Computer Science (SEECS):

Matric

990/1100

= 90%

FSc Pre-Engineering

968/1100

= 88%

NET Score

80/100

= 80%

NUST Calculation:

Matric: 90% × 10% = 9.00

FSc: 88% × 15% = 13.20

NET: 80% × 75% = 60.00

Aggregate = 9.00 + 13.20 + 60.00 = 82.20%

82.20% exceeds the NUST CS closing merit of ~78%, making this student a strong candidate for SEECS CS.

How to Improve Your NUST Aggregate

Master the NET (75% weight)

The NET dominates your aggregate. Every 1% improvement in NET adds 0.75 points to your aggregate. Focus on Physics, Mathematics, and English — the three main NET subjects.

Do Not Neglect FSc (15%)

While only 15%, a strong FSc cushion helps. Going from 80% to 95% in FSc adds 2.25 points to your aggregate, equivalent to a ~3% improvement in NET.

Practice NET Past Papers

NUST releases official past NET papers. Solving 5+ years of past papers is the most effective way to understand the question patterns and time management required.

Apply to Multiple NUST Schools

NUST has 10+ schools (SEECS, SMME, SCEE, etc.). If you narrowly miss CS at SEECS, consider applying to other NUST schools that have lower closing merits.

Understand Self-Finance Seats

NUST offers both government-funded and self-finance seats. Self-finance seats at NUST have lower merit cutoffs but higher tuition fees. The academic quality is identical.

Consider NUST Other Campuses

NUST's main H-12 campus has the highest merit. NUST campuses in Rawalpindi (MCS) and Risalpur (CAE) have lower closing merits for the same programs.

NUST Merit Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NUST NET formula for merit calculation?

NUST uses its own NET (NUST Entry Test) with a unique formula: Aggregate = (Matric% × 10%) + (FSc% × 15%) + (NET Score × 75%). This is different from the standard HEC formula. The NET score is entered directly out of 100 — a NET score of 80 means 80% for calculation purposes.

What NET score do I need for NUST CS?

For NUST Computer Science (SEECS, H-12 Islamabad), the typical closing merit is around 78%. With average Matric (90%) and FSc (85%) scores, you would need approximately 77–80+ NET score to reach the CS cutoff. Use the NUST Merit Calculator above to calculate your exact aggregate.

How many times is the NUST NET conducted per year?

NUST typically conducts the NET in two sessions — NET-1 and NET-2. Students can appear in both and NUST will use the higher score. NET-1 is usually held in January-February and NET-2 in May-June. Check nust.edu.pk for exact dates each year.

Does NUST accept ECAT or NTS scores?

No. NUST only accepts its own NET (NUST Entry Test) for engineering and technology programs. ECAT is accepted by UET Lahore/Peshawar/Taxila. If you want to apply to both NUST and UET, you need to sit for both the NET and ECAT separately.

What subjects are in the NUST NET exam?

The NUST NET includes Mathematics, Physics, English, and Intelligence tests. The weightage varies by program but Mathematics and Physics are the highest-weighted subjects for engineering programs. For management sciences, English and Business aptitude sections are included.

Can I improve my NUST merit with better FSc marks?

Yes, but the impact is limited. Since FSc carries only 15% weight, going from 80% to 100% FSc adds only 3 percentage points to your aggregate. By contrast, improving from 70% to 85% on the NET adds 11.25 percentage points. Always prioritize the NET above everything else for NUST.
