Calculate My Merit Free →In Pakistan, university admissions are based on a calculated aggregate score — also called merit percentage. Unlike many countries where interviews or portfolios dominate, Pakistani universities rely primarily on a weighted formula combining your Matric marks, FSc/intermediate marks, and entry test score to determine admission eligibility.
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has established a standard merit formula used as the baseline by most Pakistani universities:
Each university uses its own entry test and may adjust the weightings. Here are the exact formulas for Pakistan's top universities:
NUST H-12 campus is most competitive. Other campuses (SMME, MCS, SEECS) have similar or slightly lower cutoffs. ECAT is conducted by NUST itself.
FAST campuses: Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Faisalabad, Chiniot. Karachi and Lahore tend to have higher cutoffs. NU Test is FAST's own admission test.
UET Lahore is the most selective UET campus. UET Peshawar and Taxila typically have lower merit cutoffs. Civil and Electrical Engineering are most competitive.
LUMS does not follow the standard HEC formula. Academic record, essays, and recommendation letters also factor in. LUMS is the most selective private university in Pakistan.
MDCAT is conducted by the Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC). MBBS at King Edward Medical University, Allama Iqbal Medical College typically requires 90%+ aggregate.
Let's calculate the merit aggregate for a student applying to NUST Computer Science:
Matric
990/1100
= 90%
FSc Pre-Engineering
968/1100
= 88%
ECAT Score
320/400
= 80%
Calculation:
Matric: 90% × 10% = 9.00
FSc: 88% × 40% = 35.20
ECAT: 80% × 50% = 40.00
Aggregate = 9.00 + 35.20 + 40.00 = 84.20%
84.20% is within the typical NUST CS merit range of 82-88%, making this student a strong candidate.
Since the entry test carries 50% weight, it is the most impactful lever for improving your aggregate. Here are proven strategies:
The entry test has the highest weighting. Even a 5% improvement in your ECAT/MDCAT score adds 2.5 percentage points to your aggregate — equivalent to improving your entire FSc result by 6.25%.
If your exams are not yet done, FSc has the second highest weight. Improving from 80% to 90% in FSc adds 4 percentage points to your aggregate. Target practical marks, which are easier to score high in.
NUST, FAST, and UET have multiple campuses with different merit cutoffs. If you narrowly miss the main campus, you may still qualify for another campus with the same aggregate.
Submit applications to NUST, FAST, UET, and provincial universities simultaneously. Many students get admission to a backup while waiting for their first choice merit list.
Universities like Habib, Aga Khan, and AIR University use similar formulas but with lower cutoffs. IBA Karachi is highly selective but focuses on aptitude tests rather than Matric/FSc marks.
Most universities offer self-finance seats with lower merit than government-funded seats. The academic quality is identical — only the fee structure differs.
The standard formula is: Aggregate = (Matric% × 10%) + (FSc% × 40%) + (Entry Test% × 50%). Each university adjusts this formula for their specific entry test. Use the ToolForge Merit Calculator to select the right formula for your target university.
NUST uses ECAT. Formula: (Matric% × 10%) + (FSc% × 40%) + (ECAT% × 50%). NUST CS/EE merit at H-12 Islamabad typically ranges from 82-88%. Other campuses may have lower cutoffs.
Medical aggregate = (Matric% × 10%) + (FSc% × 40%) + (MDCAT% × 50%). MBBS at King Edward Medical University and Allama Iqbal Medical College requires 90%+ aggregate. MDCAT is conducted by PMC (Pakistan Medical Commission).
FAST uses its own NU Test. Formula: (Matric% × 10%) + (FSc% × 40%) + (NU Test% × 50%). FAST CS merit varies by campus: Karachi/Lahore 75-82%, other campuses slightly lower.
NUST CS (SEECS) at H-12 Islamabad typically requires 84-88% aggregate. Other NUST campuses for CS have lower cutoffs. Check NUST's official closing merit list each year for exact figures.
Matric has only 10% weight, so its impact is limited. Going from 80% to 90% in Matric adds only 1 percentage point to your aggregate. Focus on FSc (40%) and entry test (50%) for maximum impact.
