What is CNIC and Why You Need It

CNIC stands for Computerized National Identity Card. It is issued by NADRA (National Database and Registration Authority) and is the primary legal identity document for every Pakistani citizen aged 18 and above. Unlike most countries where a driver's license or passport serves as the main ID, in Pakistan the CNIC is the foundational document upon which almost every other service depends.

A valid CNIC is not optional. Without one, you are effectively cut off from the modern economy and state services:

๐Ÿฆ

Banking

Banks require CNIC to open accounts, issue debit/credit cards, and process transactions. Expired CNIC causes accounts to be flagged and frozen.

๐Ÿ“ฑ

SIM Registration

Every mobile SIM in Pakistan is legally tied to a CNIC. Expired CNIC can cause SIM deactivation by PTA.

๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ

Voting

Electoral rolls are based on CNICs. You cannot vote without a valid CNIC and your name on the voter list.

๐Ÿ›‚

Passport

A valid CNIC is the first document required for passport application. No CNIC = no passport.

๐Ÿ

Property

All property purchase, sale, and transfer deeds require CNIC verification. Registry offices verify CNIC against NADRA database.

๐Ÿš—

Driving License

CNIC is required to apply for, renew, or duplicate a driving license at any Motor Vehicle Examiner office.

๐Ÿ’ฐ

Tax Filing (NTN/FBR)

CNIC doubles as your NTN (National Tax Number) for individuals. Tax filing, refund claims, and FBR registration all require CNIC.

๐Ÿค

Government Schemes

Ehsaas Program, BISP cash transfers, subsidized Rashan (food), and all government social protection schemes are CNIC-linked.

โšก

Utility Connections

New electricity, gas, and water connections require CNIC for registration and billing.

โš–๏ธ

Legal Proceedings

Courts, police FIRs, property disputes, and succession matters all require CNIC documentation.

What Happens With an Expired CNIC

  • โ€ข Bank may freeze transactions or block your debit card during KYC checks
  • โ€ข PTA may deactivate SIMs registered on expired CNIC during periodic compliance drives
  • โ€ข Cannot apply for or renew passport until CNIC is renewed
  • โ€ข Cannot register a property deed or complete a sale/purchase
  • โ€ข Cannot participate in government schemes requiring CNIC verification
  • โ€ข Cannot file FBR income tax returns (CNIC = NTN for individuals)

Your CNIC is valid for 10 years from the date of issue. You can renew it up to 1 year before expiry โ€” so if your CNIC shows an expiry date in 2025, renewing now in 2026 still works normally. NADRA does not charge a late fee for expired CNICs.

Types of NADRA Cards

NADRA issues several different identity documents for different categories of citizens. Knowing which one you need prevents wasted trips and wrong fees:

CardFor WhomKey FeaturesValidity
CNICPakistani citizens aged 18+Standard identity card, photo, fingerprints, unique 13-digit number10 years
Smart CNICPakistani citizens aged 18+ (upgrading from old CNIC)Microchip, QR code, NFC, biometric data, machine-readable zone10 years
NICOPPakistanis permanently residing abroadDual nationality proof, visa-free Pakistan entry, consular services10 years
POCForeign nationals of Pakistani originLong-term visa equivalent, property rights in Pakistan10 years
B-Form / CRCChildren under 18Child Registration Certificate linked to parents' CNICsUntil age 18
FRCFamilies (any member)Family Registration Certificate โ€” lists all members in a householdOn-request print

Which one do you need?

  • โ€ข Living in Pakistan, turning 18 or CNIC expired: CNIC (opt for Smart CNIC โ€” only PKR 250 extra)
  • โ€ข Living abroad permanently: NICOP (can maintain without returning to Pakistan)
  • โ€ข Child just born or under 18: B-Form / CRC
  • โ€ข Need to prove all family members: FRC (Family Registration Certificate)
  • โ€ข Foreign national with Pakistani roots: POC (Pakistan Origin Card)

๐Ÿ’ณComplete CNIC Fee Structure 2026

NADRA fees are fixed and non-negotiable. Always pay through the official channel (Pak-Identity portal, Pak-ID app, or NADRA office counter). Never pay any agent or middleman โ€” it is unnecessary and a fraud risk.

Payment methods accepted: Visa/Mastercard debit or credit card (online via Pak-Identity), JazzCash, Easypaisa, 1Bill, or cash at NADRA office counter. Fees are non-refundable once the application is submitted. Always keep your payment receipt.

Required Documents by Application Type

Document requirements vary significantly depending on whether you are renewing, modifying, or applying for the first time. Bringing the wrong documents is the most common reason for a wasted trip to the NADRA office.

CNIC Renewal (Expired โ€” No Data Changes)

Simplest case โ€” can be done fully online

  • Expired CNIC number (the 13-digit number) โ€” no need to physically have the card
  • Recent passport-size photo with white background (for online upload)
  • Delivery address (CNIC will be couriered here)
  • Debit/credit card for fee payment (online) or cash (at office)

New CNIC (First-Time Applicant โ€” Turning 18)

Must visit NADRA office โ€” biometrics mandatory for first-time

  • Original B-Form (Child Registration Certificate) โ€” your NADRA registration since birth
  • Original CNIC of both parents (father and mother)
  • 2 passport-size photographs with white background
  • Matric or school certificate (as supporting document โ€” not always mandatory but useful)
  • Domicile certificate if available

Use our Age Calculator to confirm if you have reached the minimum age of 18 before your visit.

CNIC Modification (Data Change)

Can initiate online; may need office visit for verification

Address Change:Recent utility bill (electricity, gas, or water) in your name or parent's/spouse's name showing new address
Marital Status (Marriage):Original Nikah Nama (marriage certificate) + husband's CNIC
Surname Change (Women after Marriage):Nikah Nama + husband's CNIC + affidavit
Name Correction:Court affidavit declaring name change + Gazette notification (for formal changes)
Date of Birth Correction:Matric certificate + birth record (if available) + affidavit
Divorce / Marital Status Change:Divorce deed or court decree absolute

NICOP Application (Overseas Pakistanis)

Fully online โ€” no Pakistan visit required in most cases

  • Pakistani passport (valid or expired โ€” any valid proof of citizenship)
  • Previous CNIC or NICOP number (if any)
  • Proof of residence abroad (foreign driving license, utility bill, or work permit)
  • Recent passport-size photo with white background
  • Biometric verification via Pak-ID app (new 2025/26 feature โ€” eliminates office visits)

Pro tip: Always bring both originals AND photocopies of all documents to the NADRA office. Officers typically keep the photocopies and return your originals. Laminated or sealed certificates are accepted โ€” do not break official seals.

How to Renew CNIC Online โ€” Step by Step

Online CNIC renewal is the most convenient method โ€” no queues, no office visits, delivery to your doorstep. Two options are available: the Pak-Identity website and the Pak-ID mobile app. Both work identically.

Method 1: Via Pak-Identity Website (id.nadra.gov.pk)

1

Visit id.nadra.gov.pk

Open the official Pak-Identity portal in any browser. Do not use any third-party website claiming to be NADRA.

2

Register or Login

If first visit: click "Register" and create an account using your old CNIC number, active email address, and Pakistani mobile number.

3

Verify your account

Check your email for the verification link. Also verify your mobile via the SMS OTP sent to your registered number.

4

Login and access Online CNIC

After login, click "Online CNIC" from the dashboard menu.

5

Select service type

Choose "My CNIC has Expired" for renewal. For modification, select "I want to modify my data". For duplicate, select "Lost/Damaged CNIC".

6

Click "Start New Application"

The form will be pre-filled with your existing NADRA data. Review every field carefully.

7

Verify all personal details

Check name (English + Urdu), father's name, date of birth, and place of birth. Flag any errors before proceeding โ€” corrections require modification, not just renewal.

8

Upload your photo

Upload a recent passport-size photo: white background, face clearly visible, no sunglasses, no hat, file size max 5 MB, JPG or PNG format.

9

Upload supporting documents

For modification: upload proof documents (utility bill, Nikah Nama, etc.) in PDF or JPG format.

10

Enter delivery address

Type your complete delivery address. This is where your CNIC will be couriered. Include street, area, city, and postal code.

11

Select processing type

Choose Normal (PKR 750), Urgent (PKR 1,500), or Executive (PKR 2,500). Also choose Standard CNIC or Smart CNIC (+PKR 250).

12

Review the full application

Scroll through every section one final time. Mistakes found after submission may require a new (paid) application.

13

Pay the fee

Enter Visa or Mastercard debit/credit card details. Alternatively, use JazzCash or Easypaisa wallet. Payment is non-refundable.

14

Submit application

Click "Submit". A confirmation screen appears with your application number and tracking ID.

15

Save your tracking ID

Screenshot or write down the 23-digit tracking ID. Use it to check status by SMS to 8300 or at id.nadra.gov.pk.

Method 2: Via Pak-ID Mobile App

Setup Steps

  1. 1. Download "Pak-ID" from Google Play or Apple App Store
  2. 2. Register with your CNIC number and mobile number
  3. 3. Complete biometric fingerprint scan via phone camera (new feature)
  4. 4. Verify OTP sent to mobile

Application Steps

  1. 5. Select: Renewal / Modification / Duplicate
  2. 6. Fill application form (pre-populated from NADRA data)
  3. 7. Upload photo using phone camera
  4. 8. Pay fee via in-app payment
  5. 9. Track status within app โ†’ CNIC delivered to doorstep

Security tip: Create a strong, unique password for your Pak-Identity portal account โ€” it contains your biometric and personal data. Use our free Password Generator to create a 16+ character password. Never reuse your CNIC portal password on any other site.

How to Apply In-Person at NADRA Office

In-person visits are required for: first-time CNIC applicants, biometric re-capture after 3+ years of expiry, certain modification types, and B-Form applications. Here is what to expect:

1

Locate Your Nearest NADRA Registration Center

Visit nadra.gov.pk and use the "Find Center" feature. NADRA has centers in every district of Pakistan. Major cities have multiple centers including Executive centers with shorter queues (at higher fee).

2

Prepare Documents (Originals + Photocopies)

Bring originals of all required documents plus A4-size photocopies. Do not laminate documents just before visiting โ€” officers need to see original stamps and seals.

3

Get Token and Wait in Queue

Collect a service token at the entry counter. Most NADRA centers now have a token-based queuing system. Wait time varies: 30 minutes to 3+ hours depending on center and time of day. Morning visits are significantly faster.

4

Biometric Data Capture

At the biometric station: all 10 fingerprints are scanned, a digital photograph is taken, and iris scans are conducted at select centers. Ensure your fingers are clean and dry for accurate fingerprint scanning.

5

Data Entry and Verification

The NADRA officer enters your details into the system. Watch the screen carefully and verify EVERY field โ€” especially name spelling in both English and Urdu. A mistake here requires a future modification application (additional fee).

6

Fee Payment

Pay at the NADRA counter via cash, bank challan, or card (at equipped centers). Keep your payment receipt โ€” it is proof of application and needed for any dispute.

7

Receive Acknowledgment Slip

You receive a printed acknowledgment slip with your 23-digit tracking ID. Photograph it for safe keeping. Use this tracking ID for all status enquiries via SMS 8300 or online.

Tips for Faster Service

  • โ€ข Visit early morning (8โ€“9 AM) โ€” shortest queues
  • โ€ข Avoid Mondays and days after public holidays
  • โ€ข Some centers allow online appointment booking
  • โ€ข Executive centers have shorter queues (higher fee)
  • โ€ข Bring a photocopy of everything โ€” saves time at counter

Priority Service Available For

Smart CNIC โ€” Features and Why to Upgrade

Pakistan's NADRA began rolling out Smart CNICs (Smart National Identity Cards) to replace the older laminated CNICs. The Smart CNIC is not just an upgraded design โ€” it is a fundamentally different document with embedded electronic capabilities that make it significantly more secure and versatile.

FeatureOld CNICSmart CNIC
Embedded Microchipโœ—โœ“ Stores encrypted biometric data
Security LevelBasic (photo + barcode)Advanced encryption + hologram + UV features
QR Codeโœ—โœ“ Instant digital verification via phone scan

Card DurabilityLaminated โ€” prone to peelingPolycarbonate โ€” highly durable
Forgery ResistanceModerateVery high โ€” multiple security layers
Extra Cost vs StandardN/AOnly PKR 250 more

Our Recommendation

Always choose the Smart CNIC when renewing. At only PKR 250 extra (Normal: PKR 1,000 vs PKR 750), you get a card that is significantly harder to forge, accepted at more international checkpoints, and will not become obsolete as Pakistan expands its digital verification infrastructure. The Smart CNIC is the future โ€” the old format will eventually be phased out entirely.

NADRA Family Tree โ€” How to Check and Fix

Every CNIC holder in Pakistan has a Family Tree in NADRA's database. This tree digitally links you to your parents, spouse, and children through their CNIC numbers. It forms the backbone of government identity verification โ€” from property records to Ehsaas Program beneficiary checks.

What It Shows

  • โ€ขYour parents' CNIC numbers
  • โ€ขYour spouse's CNIC
  • โ€ขYour children's CNIC / B-Form numbers
  • โ€ขAll addresses registered to family members

Why It Matters

  • โ€ขInheritance and property transfers use it
  • โ€ขBISP and Ehsaas eligibility checks
  • โ€ขCourt proceedings verify family relationships
  • โ€ขPrevents identity fraud and ghost beneficiaries

Common Problems

  • โ€ขUnknown persons linked to your tree
  • โ€ขDeceased relatives still shown as alive
  • โ€ขWrong spouse or children listed
  • โ€ขDuplicate entries from data entry errors

How to Check Your Family Tree

1

Visit a NADRA Registration Center

Bring your original CNIC and request a Family Registration Certificate (FRC) print. It lists all linked family members.

2

Pak-ID App (rollout in progress)

NADRA is rolling out online family tree viewing via the Pak-ID app. Check the app for current availability in your region.

3

NADRA Helpline 0800-11786

Call and ask to verify your family tree. The agent can confirm linked CNICs over the phone for basic verification.

How to Fix Incorrect Family Tree Entries

If you find unknown individuals linked to your family tree โ€” a common fraud vector โ€” act immediately:

  1. 1. Visit NADRA Registration Center with your original CNIC
  2. 2. Request a family tree printout and identify the incorrect entry
  3. 3. Prepare an affidavit stating that the linked person is not a family member
  4. 4. Submit the affidavit + CNIC + family tree correction application form
  5. 5. NADRA investigates and removes incorrect entries within 15โ€“30 working days
  6. 6. File a police FIR if you suspect deliberate identity fraud

10 Common CNIC Problems and Solutions

01

"CNIC number already registered" error on Pak-Identity

Solution: This means an account already exists with your CNIC. Use "Forgot Password" with your CNIC number and registered email. If you never created an account, someone else may have โ€” call NADRA helpline 0800-11786 to report potential unauthorized account creation.

02

Name spelling mismatch between Urdu and English on CNIC

Solution: Apply for a modification (same fee as renewal). Upload your matric certificate as supporting proof of correct spelling. Both English and Urdu names are printed on the CNIC โ€” both must match your documents.

03

Father's CNIC not available (deceased parent)

Solution: Bring a death certificate from Union Council or NADRA (DEVC โ€” Death Event Verification Certificate). This substitutes for the deceased parent's CNIC. Also bring any old NIC or document showing the deceased parent's CNIC number if available.

04

Photo rejected during online application

Solution: NADRA photo requirements: pure white background, face fully visible and centered, no sunglasses or hat, no visible teeth, neutral expression, photo taken within last 6 months, minimum 300ร—300 pixels, maximum 5 MB, JPG or PNG format. Take the photo in natural daylight against a white wall.

05

Online payment failed or not confirmed

Solution: Check your bank statement โ€” if deducted, wait 24 hours for NADRA to reconcile. If not confirmed after 24 hours, call NADRA helpline 0800-11786 with your payment reference number. If not deducted, try a different card or visit NADRA office to pay in person.

06

CNIC shows wrong address (moved to new city)

Solution: Apply for address modification. Submit a recent utility bill (electricity, gas, or telephone) showing your new address in your name or parent's/spouse's name. Process takes the standard renewal timeline. Your CNIC will be delivered to the new address after update.

07

Biometric verification not matching at NADRA

Solution: This happens with damaged fingerprints (manual laborers, burn injuries, elderly). Visit the NADRA center in person with original documents. NADRA has alternate biometric procedures for those with damaged fingerprints including iris scan and facial recognition.

08

CNIC dispatched but not delivered after 10 working days

Solution: SMS your tracking number to 8300 to get the courier company name. Call that courier directly with your tracking number. If the courier has returned the CNIC to NADRA (common if address was incomplete), call NADRA helpline to arrange re-delivery or collection from NADRA office.

09

Minor turning 18 but original B-Form is lost

Solution: Apply for a Duplicate B-Form first โ€” visit NADRA with parents' CNICs and a family affidavit. Once duplicate B-Form is obtained, proceed with first-time CNIC application. The B-Form is legally required for the first CNIC.

10

Overseas Pakistani cannot complete biometric for NICOP

Solution: Use the Pak-ID app's new remote biometric feature โ€” fingerprint scanning via phone camera from abroad. Alternatively, visit the nearest Pakistani embassy or consulate where NADRA-equipped computers and biometric scanners are available for overseas applications.

CNIC for Special Cases

Transgender Persons

Pakistan legally recognizes a third gender following the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act 2018. NADRA issues CNICs with an "X" gender marker for transgender individuals who prefer not to identify as male or female.

  • โ€ข Same documents and process as regular CNIC application
  • โ€ข No medical certificate required โ€” self-identification is accepted
  • โ€ข All rights (banking, SIM, property, voting) apply equally
  • โ€ข NADRA offices are required to process these applications without discrimination

Disabled Persons

NADRA provides special accommodation for citizens with disabilities to ensure they can access CNIC services:

  • โ€ข Priority service counters at all NADRA Registration Centers
  • โ€ข Home Visit Facility: For severely disabled persons who cannot travel. Call NADRA helpline 0800-11786 to arrange a scheduled home visit by a NADRA mobile team.
  • โ€ข Alternative biometric procedures for those with missing fingers or damaged fingerprints
  • โ€ข The CNIC itself can be marked with disability status for priority access to government schemes

Homeless / Displaced Persons

Lack of a fixed address should not prevent any Pakistani from obtaining a CNIC. NADRA has provisions for undocumented and displaced citizens:

  • โ€ข Alternative address verification โ€” a reference letter from a local Union Council is accepted
  • โ€ข NGO and social welfare referral letters accepted at select centers
  • โ€ข Refugee and IDP (Internally Displaced Person) programs with UNHCR and BISP coordination
  • โ€ข NADRA mobile registration vans visit flood-affected and displaced communities

Senior Citizens (60+ Years)

  • โ€ข Priority counter service at all NADRA Registration Centers โ€” no waiting in general queue
  • โ€ข If mobility-impaired: home visit facility available via NADRA helpline 0800-11786
  • โ€ข Standard CNIC fees apply (no fee waiver as of 2026)
  • โ€ข For government pensioners: some departments reimburse renewal fees โ€” check with your pension office
  • โ€ข Ehsaas beneficiaries may have CNIC renewal facilitated free of charge โ€” check with local Ehsaas center
